After graduating from a Bachelor of Music program (Boston University, 1963), but subsequently observing the liberal arts experience as a teacher (Brown University, 1971-75) I'm an advocate of education that incorporates studies in the arts with study of many different subjects. This is not surprising coming from an ethnomusicologist, who earned a MA in 1967 as well as the Ph.D. at UCLA. The program in ethnomusicology that I started at UC Berkeley (from 1975-1976) is a good fit in a department of music within a College of Letters and Science. It is fun to have diverse subjects. I also like seeing the whole perspective. I love instructing both students in the undergraduate level (majors as well as non-majors who I've written three textbooks-Music in India: Music in India: Classical Traditions, Thinking Musically, as well as Music in Japan: Experiencing Cultural Expression, Music) and graduate students. It is my case that I'm the sole professor as well as periods during which I perform administrative duties (such as being Chair of Department of Music, 1983-1988, Director of Undergraduate Advising between 1992 and 1998, and Chair of Deans of College of Letters and Science between 1994 and 1998).
